Etiwanda pulled off a big upset over Sierra Canyon in the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals. The Eagles had a solid season going into the game at 20-7. Sierra Canyon, on the other hand, racked up a 22-3 record entering the match, ranking 13th in the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings.
Almost two months before the game, these two teams met in a match dominated by Sierra Canyon. That only inspired Etiwanda to outplay the Trailblazers, taking a 65-60 victory.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the game, neither letting the other gain any substantial advantage. After Sierra Canyon took a first quarter lead, Etiwanda took a 28-26 score into the half.
The Eagles built on their lead in the third quarter, leading 48-40 going into the final quarter. Sierra Canyon tried to work its way back in the game, but Etiwanda held of the Trailblazers’ forces, advancing to the next round of the playoffs.
Kameron Edwards was the player of the game, leading Etiwanda with a game-high 23 points. Sophomore Miles Oliver finished with 14 points, 11 of which came in Etiwanda’s crucial third quarter.
In the semifinals, the Eagles will face another one of DigitalSports’ top teams, Mater Dei. Etiwanda has proven that they should not be underestimated once already. See if they can do it again on February 28.
